Coin description
The reverse depicts a kneeling goddess with flowing blue hair, a golden crown and blue attire trimmed in gold. She pours sparkling water from an ornate vessel into the water below. Rocky shores, distant mountains and a star filled sky surround her, with a large luminous blue sphere behind her head. The glowing Aquarius symbol appears at the upper right, while “AQUARIUS” curves along the upper left in white lettering. A beaded border frames the artwork inside a silver ring of zodiac figures in relief.
The obverse side of the coin features the Coat of Arms of the Republic of Ghana at its center. Surrounding the Coat of Arms is a complete zodiac calendar, with all twelve zodiac icons arranged in a circular pattern. The inscriptions include: “REPUBLIC OF GHANA” (the issuing country), “2026” (the year of issue), and “FIVE CEDIS” (the face value).
Background information
The zodiac is a system of twelve signs based on divisions of the Sun’s apparent annual path across the sky. Its roots lie in ancient Babylonian astronomy, with later developments in Greek and Roman astrology. Each sign became associated with particular symbols, elements and planets. These traditions have influenced art, storytelling and ideas about character for centuries.
Aquarius is the eleventh sign of the Western zodiac. In tropical astrology, it corresponds approximately to the period from 20 January to 18 February. Its symbol is the Water Bearer, traditionally shown pouring water from a vessel. Aquarius is classified as an air sign, with Saturn as its traditional ruling planet and Uranus in modern astrology. Astrological tradition associates it with originality, independence, intellectual curiosity and concern for the wider community.
