Coin description
The reverse depicts a horned goddess in teal and golden attire seated beside a majestic white goat. Both wear elaborate ornaments with turquoise accents. A glowing orb hovers above her outstretched palm, while mountains, stars and a crescent moon fill the background. The goat’s sweeping horns and flowing coat dominate the right side, beside a luminous Capricorn symbol. “CAPRICORN” curves along the lower right edge in white lettering. A beaded border separates the colorful scene from an outer silver ring featuring zodiac figures in relief.
The obverse side of the coin features the Coat of Arms of the Republic of Ghana at its center. Surrounding the Coat of Arms is a complete zodiac calendar, with all twelve zodiac icons arranged in a circular pattern. The inscriptions include: “REPUBLIC OF GHANA” (the issuing country), “2026” (the year of issue), and “FIVE CEDIS” (the face value).
Background information
The zodiac is a system of twelve signs based on divisions of the Sun’s apparent annual path across the sky. Its roots lie in ancient Babylonian astronomy, with later developments in Greek and Roman astrology. Each sign became associated with particular symbols, elements and planets. These traditions have influenced art, storytelling and ideas about character for centuries.
Capricorn is the tenth sign of the Western zodiac. In tropical astrology, it corresponds approximately to the period from 22 December to 19 January. Its traditional symbol is the sea goat, a mythical creature combining the upper body of a goat with the tail of a fish. Capricorn is classified as an earth sign and ruled by Saturn. Astrological tradition associates it with discipline, patience, responsibility and ambition, emphasizing steady progress towards long term goals.
