Ītzpāpālōtl - Aztec Heritage series - Liberia 2026 PROOF 1/2oz silver coin

Striking skeletal imagery, sweeping wings and a smouldering landscape give the “Obsidian Butterfly” a commanding presence within the generous 40 mm format. Deep purples and glowing reds contrast with the pale figure, creating a bold collectible for those drawn to the more mysterious side of Aztec mythology. Intricate silver ornament frames the scene, adding another layer of detail to this dramatic interpretation.

Coin description

The reverse shows Ītzpāpālōtl seated on jagged rock, her skeletal torso framed by enormous dark butterfly wings edged with sharp spikes. She wears an ornamental headband and a black garment patterned with white stars. Long claws and a curved blade reinforce her menacing appearance. Behind her, leafless trees and pointed mountains rise beneath a purple sky, with red fissures glowing across the ground. An ornate silver border surrounds the scene, with a stepped pyramid, small figures and the “AZTEC HERITAGE” inscription at the bottom.

The obverse presents the Coat of Arms of Liberia at the center, surrounded by an elaborate Aztec-inspired ornamental design filled with geometric motifs and symbolic decorative patterns reflecting ancient Mesoamerican art and architecture. The inscriptions “REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA,” “2026,” “5 DOLLARS,” and “1/2 OZ .999 FINE SILVER” complete the official specifications of the coin.

Background information

The Aztec civilization developed one of the most advanced and influential cultures of ancient Mesoamerica. Their society was deeply connected to mythology, astronomy, warfare, ritual traditions, and monumental architecture. Gods representing natural and cosmic forces played a central role in Aztec life, shaping ceremonies, beliefs, and the structure of their empire.

Ītzpāpālōtl, whose Nahuatl name is commonly translated as “Obsidian Butterfly”, was a fierce goddess with strong warrior associations. Particularly important in Chichimec traditions, she also became part of Nahua religious belief and was linked to the mythical realm of Tamoanchan. Her imagery combines butterfly features with sharp claws and stone blades. In one account preserved in the Leyenda de los Soles, knives of different colours emerge when her body is burned.
