Coin description
The reverse presents Xiuhtecuhtli in Ultra High Relief, wearing an elaborate headdress, broad collar and geometric ceremonial armour. His glowing eyes and open mouth give the figure a fierce expression. A flaming serpent crowns the staff held in one hand, while swirling blue energy rises above the other. Erupting volcanoes, lightning, dark clouds and a bright sun fill the background, with carved stone fragments in the foreground. HD printing heightens the contrast between cool blues and fiery reds, emphasising the depth of the sculpted design.
The obverse presents the Coat of Arms of Liberia surrounded by a highly detailed Aztec-inspired ornamental pattern featuring geometric motifs, symbolic skull imagery, and ceremonial decorative elements inspired by ancient Mesoamerican culture. Background information
The Aztec civilization built a complex religious world centered around powerful gods representing war, sacrifice, fertility, nature, and cosmic balance. Ceremonies and rituals dedicated to these deities played an essential role in Aztec society and were believed to maintain harmony between the earthly and divine worlds.
Xiuhtecuhtli, whose name means “Turquoise Lord,” was the Aztec god of fire and a deity associated with rulership, time and the calendar. He was closely linked with Huehueteotl, the Old God, and with Xiuhcoatl, the Fire Serpent. Xiuhtecuhtli presided over the New Fire ceremony, held every 52 years to mark the renewal of the calendar cycle. In Aztec belief, this ritual helped ensure the continuation of the sun’s journey and the preservation of cosmic order.
