Coin description

The reverse features a cream colored sea goat with long curved horns and a curling fish tail covered in blue scales. Geometric outlines, stars and constellation details fill the deep blue watercolor background. Saturn’s symbol appears inside a green circle at the upper left, while a red oval accent decorates the lower curve of the tail. Fine decorative linework follows the colored perimeter. “CAPRICORN” curves along the lower left in white lettering outlined in red. A beaded border and an outer silver ring of zodiac figures complete the design.

The obverse side of the coin features the Coat of Arms of the Republic of Ghana at its center. Surrounding the Coat of Arms is a complete zodiac calendar, with all twelve zodiac icons arranged in a circular pattern. The inscriptions include: “REPUBLIC OF GHANA” (the issuing country), “2026” (the year of issue), and “FIVE CEDIS” (the face value).

Background information

The zodiac is a system of twelve signs based on divisions of the Sun’s apparent annual path across the sky. Its roots lie in ancient Babylonian astronomy, with later developments in Greek and Roman astrology. Each sign became associated with particular symbols, elements and planets. These traditions have influenced art, storytelling and ideas about character for centuries.

Capricorn is the tenth sign of the Western zodiac. In tropical astrology, it corresponds approximately to the period from 22 December to 19 January. Its traditional symbol is the sea goat, a mythical creature combining the upper body of a goat with the tail of a fish. Capricorn is classified as an earth sign and ruled by Saturn. Astrological tradition associates it with discipline, patience, responsibility and ambition, emphasizing steady progress towards long term goals.
