Background information
Bastet, one of the most beloved deities of ancient Egypt, began as a lion-headed warrior goddess but later became more commonly depicted as a domestic cat or a woman with a cat’s head. She embodied protection, fertility, and the warmth of home, while also retaining her fierce attributes as a defender of the pharaoh and the nation. Bastet was closely tied to joy, music, and celebration, yet she could transform into a ferocious protector when threatened, embodying the duality of gentleness and ferocity.
Her cult center was in Bubastis, where grand festivals in her honor were held, attracting pilgrims from across Egypt. Ancient historians described these gatherings as some of the most joyous events in the Egyptian calendar, marked by music, dancing, and offerings. Cats were considered sacred to Bastet, and harming them was a grave offense. Through her, the Egyptians celebrated both the serenity of daily life and the power of divine guardianship.
