Coin description
The reverse depicts Mictlāntēcutli as a skeletal figure wearing tattered dark drapery and gold coloured ornaments. His exposed skull and ribcage stand out against a shadowy setting illuminated by orange fire. Curling smoke, rugged rocks and a stone wall carved with symbolic patterns deepen the atmosphere. A silver border filled with Aztec inspired pictographic and geometric motifs surrounds the coloured composition. At the bottom, a stepped pyramid, small figures and decorative plant motifs accompany the prominent “AZTEC HERITAGE” inscription.
The obverse presents the Coat of Arms of Liberia at the center, surrounded by an elaborate Aztec-inspired ornamental design filled with geometric motifs and symbolic decorative patterns reflecting ancient Mesoamerican art and architecture. The inscriptions “REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA,” “2026,” “5 DOLLARS,” and “1/2 OZ .999 FINE SILVER” complete the official specifications of the coin.
Background information
The Aztec civilization developed one of the most advanced and influential cultures of ancient Mesoamerica. Their society was deeply connected to mythology, astronomy, warfare, ritual traditions, and monumental architecture. Gods representing natural and cosmic forces played a central role in Aztec life, shaping ceremonies, beliefs, and the structure of their empire.
Mictlāntēcutli was the Aztec god of death and ruler of Mictlan, the realm of the dead. Commonly represented with a skull face and skeletal body, he occupied the deepest of the underworld’s nine levels. In Aztec belief, those who died of natural causes faced a difficult journey before reaching his domain. He also appears in creation traditions in which Quetzalcoatl descends to Mictlan to recover ancestral bones, linking the realm of death with the origins of a new humanity.
