Background information
Anubis, the jackal-headed god, was the protector of tombs and the divine guide of souls into the afterlife. Associated with mummification, Anubis was believed to oversee embalming rituals and safeguard the bodies of the dead. In Egyptian belief, the jackal was linked to cemeteries, as wild jackals often roamed burial grounds; thus Anubis became the guardian against desecration. He was also a psychopomp, escorting souls to the Hall of Judgment, where he weighed the heart of the deceased against the feather of Ma’at to determine their fate in the afterlife.
Anubis was often depicted as a sleek black jackal or a man with a jackal’s head, symbolizing both death and regeneration. His role in funerary practices was central, and priests often wore jackal masks during mummification ceremonies to represent his presence. Highly respected across Egypt, Anubis embodied both the fear of death and the promise of protection, guiding the dead safely into eternity.
