Coin description

In the center of the reverse is a vivid, full-color depiction of the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I by Gustav Klimt, faithfully recreated and surrounded by an elegant decorative frame. The detailed artwork and framing give the piece the appearance of a miniature gallery masterpiece, capturing the spirit and style of the original with exceptional clarity.

The obverse side of the coin presents a dynamic scene depicting a masked art thief in mid-escape, rendered in detailed relief. At the top, the inscription “CATCH ME IF YOU CANVAS” appears in bold, stylized lettering, setting the theme of the design. The central element is the framed inset featuring the Coat of Arms of the Republic of Ghana, along with the inscriptions “5 CEDIS” (face value) and “2026” (year of issue) positioned as though the thief is carrying it out of the museum. The background features stylized gallery walls and artworks in soft relief. Along the lower edge, the inscriptions “REPUBLIC OF GHANA” and “1 OZ .999 FINE SILVER” complete the official details of the obverse.

Background information

Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, completed in 1907, is one of Gustav Klimt’s most celebrated works and the pinnacle of his Golden Phase. The painting portrays Adele Bloch-Bauer surrounded by intricate patterns of gold leaf, geometric motifs, and delicate ornamentation inspired by Byzantine mosaics. Klimt blended realism in the face and hands with highly decorative abstract forms, creating a luminous fusion of portraiture and symbolism. The artwork later became famous for its complex history, including wartime seizure and eventual restitution.

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was a leading Austrian painter and co-founder of the Vienna Secession, known for his innovative fusion of symbolism, sensuality, and ornamental design. His work often incorporated gold leaf, richly patterned surfaces, and themes exploring love, identity, and the human condition. Klimt’s career included both public commissions and deeply personal allegorical paintings. Though controversial in his time, he profoundly influenced modern art. His distinctive style and use of luxury materials make him one of the most recognizable artists of the early 20th century.
