Background information

The idea for Christ the Redeemer dates to the late 19th century, when Catholic leaders in Brazil proposed erecting a religious monument. Initial plans stalled, but momentum revived in the 1920s with support from the Catholic Circle of Rio de Janeiro. Designed by French sculptor Paul Landowski and engineered by Brazilian Heitor da Silva Costa, construction began in 1926. The statue, built atop Mount Corcovado, was completed in 1931 after five years of work. It stands 30 meters tall with outstretched arms symbolizing protection and peace. The surface was covered with small soapstone tiles, chosen for durability and appearance. Christ the Redeemer reflects both the rise of Catholic identity in Brazil and the growing use of reinforced concrete in monumental art. Inaugurated on October 12, 1931, it became an enduring national symbol. The project united international talent with Brazilian engineering, marking a milestone in early 20th-century religious and civic architecture.
