Coin description

The reverse features a vivid full-color reproduction of The Storm on the Sea of Galilee by Rembrandt van Rijn, surrounded by an elegant decorative frame that enhances the museum-like presentation. The artwork captures the violent storm, crashing waves, and desperate struggle of the sailors aboard the small fishing vessel. Rembrandt’s masterful contrasts of light and shadow intensify the drama and movement of the scene, preserving the emotional power of the original masterpiece.

The obverse continues the recognizable visual identity of the Catch Me If You Canvas series, depicting a masked art thief escaping with a framed artwork. At the top, the inscription “CATCH ME IF YOU CANVAS” appears in bold stylized lettering. The framed inset features the Coat of Arms of the Republic of Ghana together with the inscriptions “5 CEDIS” and “2026,” integrated into the composition as if it were part of the stolen exhibit. The lower edge includes the inscriptions “REPUBLIC OF GHANA” and “1 OZ .999 FINE SILVER,” while the surrounding gallery-style background reinforces the museum-heist atmosphere.

Background information

The Storm on the Sea of Galilee, painted in 1633, is Rembrandt’s only known seascape and depicts the biblical story of Jesus calming the storm on the Sea of Galilee. The painting is celebrated for its dramatic realism, powerful movement, and emotional intensity, with towering waves and terrified sailors illuminated by flashes of light. In 1990, the artwork was stolen during the infamous Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum heist in Boston and has remained missing ever since.

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) is widely regarded as one of the greatest painters in European art history. Known for his extraordinary mastery of light, emotion, and realism, he produced iconic portraits, biblical scenes, and historical works during the Dutch Golden Age. His ability to capture human expression and dramatic atmosphere transformed painting and influenced generations of artists worldwide. Today, Rembrandt’s works remain among the most celebrated and valuable masterpieces ever created.
