PopCoins proudly presents the third release in the eye-catching Catch Me If You Canvas series, this time honoring one of the most mysterious missing masterpieces in art history: Nativity with San Lorenzo and San Francesco by Caravaggio. Struck in 1 oz of .999 pure silver and issued in a refined 36 × 53 mm rectangular format, the coin faithfully recreates the dramatic lighting and emotional intensity of the original Baroque painting. Issued as 5 Cedis legal tender by Ghana, the reverse transforms the lost masterpiece into a collectible work of art, while the obverse continues the series’ signature museum-heist concept.
Limited to just 99 pieces worldwide, this release combines art, mystery, and modern numismatic creativity in a truly distinctive format. The disappearance of Caravaggio’s masterpiece in 1969 turned the painting into one of the world’s most famous stolen artworks, making this coin both a tribute to artistic genius and a symbolic recovery of lost cultural heritage. Each coin is presented in a premium blister pack with a certificate of authenticity. Available at PopCoins distributors worldwide.
Coin description
The reverse features a detailed full-color reproduction of Nativity with San Lorenzo and San Francesco by Caravaggio, framed elegantly to resemble a museum display piece. The artwork captures Caravaggio’s dramatic use of chiaroscuro, contrasting deep shadows with focused illumination to create an emotional and intimate nativity scene. The dark atmosphere and realistic human expressions preserve the powerful visual character of the original masterpiece.
The obverse presents the familiar visual identity of the Catch Me If You Canvas series, depicting a masked art thief escaping with a framed artwork under his arm. At the top, the inscription “CATCH ME IF YOU CANVAS” appears in large stylized lettering. The framed inset contains the Coat of Arms of the Republic of Ghana together with the inscriptions “5 CEDIS” and “2026,” integrated into the design as if it were part of the stolen exhibit. The lower section includes the inscriptions “REPUBLIC OF GHANA” and “1 OZ .999 FINE SILVER,” while the surrounding gallery interior reinforces the museum-heist atmosphere.
Background information
Nativity with San Lorenzo and San Francesco was painted by Caravaggio in 1609 for the Oratory of San Lorenzo in Palermo, Sicily. The work depicts the birth of Christ with Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Lawrence present beside the Holy Family. Unlike traditional idealized religious art of the period, Caravaggio portrayed the figures with raw realism, dramatic shadows, and deeply human emotion. In 1969, the painting was stolen from the oratory and has never been recovered, becoming one of the most famous unsolved art thefts in history.
Caravaggio (1571–1610) was one of the most influential painters of the Baroque era, renowned for his revolutionary use of light, shadow, and realism. His works rejected idealized forms in favor of emotionally intense scenes featuring ordinary people as models. Caravaggio’s dramatic style transformed European painting and influenced generations of artists across Italy and beyond. Despite his artistic brilliance, his turbulent personal life and mysterious death contributed to his legendary status in art history.
